Runners-Bike wins Todays’s Parents Approved

Great news!
Runners-Bike just made our inaugural list of Today’s Parent Approved winning products — selected based on quality, ease of use, and value for money — which were evaluated and rated by Today’s Parent readers, editors and industry leaders.

No pedals? No wheels? Huh? Balance (or run) bikes are a trend that’s here to stay. Children have to use their legs for balance and movement, which makes the eventual transition to a big-kid bike easier. Skip the training wheels and head straight to the sidewalk. Runners has offered classic wooden and aluminium balance bikes before, but their latest baby is sturdy and steel framed, with pneumatic wheels for better shock absorption. For kids ages two to five. Comes in green, blue and pink, too.

The History of Balance Bikes

Back in 1817 the German Baron Karl von Drais invented what he called a running machine. It was made of wood and had a wheel in front and one in back. The rider could steer it with handle bars. The rider sat on the saddle and pushed the machine along with his feet. The design was patented and several thousand of these big wooden toys were manufactured.

The odd machines became known as Draisiennes or Hobby Horses or Dandy Horses. They soon became something of a fad but it was short lived. The machines were not practical for travel over any significant distance. They worked best on level ground on well tended paths and walkways.

The Draisienne quickly gave way to more practical designs with pedals for efficiency and brakes for safety and the modern bicycle was born. The Baron’s original machine was all but forgotten until someone made an important discovery. There is a demographic for whom this ancestor to the bicycle is ideal.

There are people who do not travel significant distances. There are people who stay on well tended paths and sidewalks. There are people who do not ride their vehicles down steep hills. For a toddler who has learned to walk but isn’t yet ready for a real bicycle a tiny, updated version of the Baron’s invention is the perfect intermediate step.

A runners bike also known as a balance bike is a tiny toddler-sized vehicle that any child who can walk can enjoy. The tricycle which has traditionally been the intermediate step to bicycling, eliminates the need for balance. The runners bike helps the child to learn to balance.

The scariest part of learning to ride a bike is the out-of-control feeling of not having your feet on the ground. The balance bike enables the rider to learn to coast and steer with the confidence of knowing the ground is right under their feet. Baron von Drais probably had no idea that his invention would inspire wooden toys that would give two year olds their first taste of bicycling adventure.

Yeah, we got a nice review in Canadian Natural Mama

I have been looking for a Balance Bike to get for my youngest daughter for her 2nd birthday for a while now. I wanted to find one that was made to last, reasonably priced, and eco-friendly. Well I have found the PERFECT bike – and its Canadian Too! Runners Bike makes beautifully designed, functional, safe, and easy to use wooden push bikes. These Bikes are very well made and are so much fun. Keep reading to learn more and to find out how you can win a bike for your little runner.

Runners Bikes are brilliantly designed to build children’s motor skills and confidence in a super fun and safe way. The Runners Bike is a bike without pedals – your child uses their own legs for balance and movement. It is made without any sharp parts, pinching spaces, or spokes – making it safe for even the youngest toddlers. They also are very sturdy, and don’t tip over like tricycles or bikes with training wheels. While running around on their Runners Bike, kids are not only having a ton of fun, but they are also building the essential balancing skills they need to learn to ride a traditional bike (but at a much younger age). After trying out a Runners Push Bike, I am a total convert and have been telling everyone I know about how amazing they are.

My youngest is not yet two, but she is already having so much fun on her Runners Bike. She isn’t ready to run yet, but is already pushing it around the house and yard. She is so pleased with her “big girl bike” and asks to ride it daily. Even after just a few days I began to see improvement in her balance and an increase in her confidence. I am sure she will be accompanying me and her sisters on our family bike rides in no time- yay!

Runners Bikes are beautifully crafted out of solid birch-wood and are completely eco-friendly. We really try to keep plastic toys out of our home (they look tacky, are bad for the planet, and can be unhealthy), and the Runners Bike is a nice departure from traditional plastic toddler toys. At first I wondered if the wood frame would make the bike heavy- but I was happily surprised that it weighs only 10 lbs. The Birch-wood is light, yet very strong and sturdy. We tried the traditional model of Runners Bike, but a “princess” model is now available with pink details and painted flowers – so sweet.

I really love the attention to detail and quality that I have seen in the Runners Balance Bike. The Bike features air filled bike tires that are great for even the roughest terrain. It also has a fun bell (that my daughter loves) and a wipe-able padded seat. The Runners Bikes seat is easily adjustable as well, so it grows with your child. I honestly love everything about this bike and feel great recommending it to everyone.

Runners Bike at a glance:
-Solid Birch-wood Frame
-Pneumatic Rubber Wheels
-Soft, Padded Synthetic Leather Seat
-Seat Adjusts from 13.5 – 16.5 inches
-Ages 2-5 years
-Weight: 10 lbs
-1 year warranty

Runners Crafted Bikes is a Canadian family owned and operated business that is based out of Alberta. The owners were inspired by their own two rough and tumble boys to design Runners Bikes. They knew that wooden push bikes should be strong, inexpensive, and designed for fun. I think the results speak for themselves!

Product Review: Runners-Bike By Amy Gallagher

By Amy Gallagher

As the creator of a product review web site, my general focus is on the world of health and wellness. Every so often a product of a broader genre comes along that is worth noting and reviewing. Runners-Bike is one of those remarkable items.

This unique ‘push bike’ is geared for young children ages 2-5. Rather than using standard pedals, the child relies on his own legs to ‘run’ the bike. This makes for great exercise for a young one, and encourages the child to find their inner point of balance. Wobbling is to be expected at first, yet their own feet and legs provide appropriate security and support. Once the child finds their balance, they can lift their feet from the ground and coast…faster and faster! Braking is done in a simple and natural fashion: simply put down the feet! Runners-Bike also provides a greater sense of security than a standard tricycle, as children are planted near the ground, and fully in control of their speed. When it comes time for the child to evolve to a standard 2-wheeler, they have already mastered this way of balance, and can generally hop on a 2-wheeler and sail with ease.

The Runners-Bike is reminiscent of the good old days of natural wooden toys. The solid birchwood frame is far more durable than plastic and metal, enduring the natural wear and tear of an enthusiastic child. The wheels are made of pneumatic rubber, providing perfect cushioning for rocks and bumps. This bike is of superb quality, making a valuable gift that will be cherished for years to come. Runners-bikes come in two attractive styles: standard, or the flowery ‘Princess-Runners’ for gals.

The most important point to note about the Runners-Bike is: children love them! Several of my friends have purchased the bike for their children, and it quickly becomes their most beloved toy, inspiring hours of fun (as well as exercise!). Check out this video on the Runners’ web site. www.Runner-Bike.com
The smiles of pure glee and delight on the kids’ faces say it all.

Why do we not sell LikeABikes?

Our little guys, Linus and Finni, used a LikeaBike (price 350 CAD) and a Roba-Racer (a cheaper wooden bike around 90 CAD) for about 2 years. To be honest with you LikeaBikes are made in a good quality but we find that a wooden bike shouldn’t be so pricey! A wooden bike should last for a couple of years! Runners-Bike are extremly tested by our test pilots Linus and Finni.

The cheaper bikes, mostly made with rubber tires, are not very comfortable and not so secure: Using rubber tires is not a good choice because you feel each stone under you and no the long run your little ones lower back is in danger!
So that’s why we created Runners-Bike: a secure, good quality wooden kids bike for a good price.
